Garden Ramblings

2009 was filled with highs and lows. The garden had it’s best business year yet, thanks to all of you. This was despite the terrible weather and plague of thistles that conspired against us. In October we added a new little farmhand to the family with the birth of our son, Conor. He would be the reason we’re a little late getting things updated for the new season. We’ve been having trouble teaching him to type. Maybe we’ll have better luck getting him to pull weeds. On a sad note, we said goodbye to Grandma Arvella in December. My aunt said it best when she said, “She lives on in all the beautiful iris that bloom in gardens across the country.”

This year we have nearly 500 varieties of bearded iris for sale and over 130 beardless varieties to offer. We’ve been collecting more and more beardless each year, so keep watching for an increase in available varieties. Our Peony bed is coming along and we should have a few to offer next year. The Poppies have not faired as well, we hope to build up a nice collection but it will be a few years before we have them to offer.

We are continuing our plastic pot exchange program to encourage some recycling. We will pay $.10 for every plastic pot you bring in that we can use or give you $.20 off your order for each pot we can use. Just gather up all those plastic pots you have laying around from all the plants you bought and bring them over. We're looking for pots that are 6 inches in diameter or larger. Please don't bring pots to exchange at the Open Garden, that day is too busy, we'll be happy to arrange another time to exchange them.

You are always welcome to visit our garden during bloom season. Peak bloom for the Tall Bearded is between May 25th and June 10th, however, our SDBs are going strong by the second week of May and our Japanese don’t finish until the last couple weeks of June so you’ll find something blooming anytime in between.
