Garden Ramblings
2011 was a big year for us. We welcomed Abigail Nicole into the world in August. Having 2 little ones under the age of three has slowed us down a bit so we must apologize for the delay getting the site updated for this year. Funny story...you may notice that the first tall bearded iris listed is called Abigail Nicole, we did not intentionally name our daughter after an iris. We had a tough time picking out a name and had managed to come up with a couple potential first names but weren't having a lot of luck with possible middle names. It "came to me in a dream" one night to pair Nicole with Abigail as one of the potential name choices. The whole time I was pregnant I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to the iris beds or even the website. No one happened to order Abigail Nicole last year either. Matt agreed that he liked the name combo so when I was in labor and we were on the way to the hospital we decided to go with that choice (we never did come up with a middle name to go with our other option). A couple weeks after Abby was born Dad came in from the garden and said "Do you know you have an iris named Abigail Nicole?" At that point I remembered it and the fact that it's the first listing in the catalog. I figured that the name was meant to be if I managed to forget the iris for that long.
This year we have nearly 800 varieties of bearded iris and over 200 varieties of beardless iris. Our Peony bed is coming along and we have a few to offer this year. The Poppies have not faired well, we hope to build up a nice collection but it will be a few years before we have them to offer.
You are always welcome to visit our garden during bloom season. Peak bloom for the Tall Bearded is between May 25th and June 10th, however, our SDBs are going strong by the second week of May and our Japanese don’t finish until the last couple weeks of June so you’ll find something blooming anytime in between.
